Rufus Norman

Rufus Norman was born in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and rooted in the culture, music and brilliant colors of his birthplace. Recognizing his artistic talent as a child, Rufus' parents enrolled him in art classes at Pratt Institute shortly after they moved to New York. Throughout his elementary school years, Rufus was asked to create murals for the school's walls. While a student at New York City's High School of Music and Art (now named Firoello H La Guardia High School of Music and Art and the Performing Arts), Rufus was introduced to the work of the art masters. His work was frequently compared to the work of Ingres. However, Rufus was attracted to the work of the popular artists at that time, especially Pollack, DeKooning, Kandinsky and Picasso. Through the dramatic use of acrylics, oils and watercolors, Rufus Norman creates colorful expressions of the incredibly diverse people he has encountered through his life experiences.

After high school graduation, Rufus left fine art to pursue and achieve success in a technical business career. Only after his children were grown and independent, and after accepting the fact that he is and always will be a painter, Rufus resumed painting.

In 2005, Rufus was selected as one of the winners of a competition at Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York City. In 2012, Rufus was selected to be an Artist-in-Residence at Montpelier Art Center in Laurel, Maryland.

Art by Rufus is included in private collections around the world. From his studio in Annapolis, Maryland, Rufus continues to paint expressively and abstractly in all paint mediums while expanding the choice of venues in which to exhibit his work.

Artist Statement

Sensitive to environmental issues, most of my current work is with the acrylic medium. Since my painting process is direct “outside in” without preconceived conclusion, I paint in a layering method – changing and redefining the starting forms to develop the logic of my desired statement.

I want to express mannerisms of faces and figures using the darks and lights of colors to define the drama of the painting.

I am fascinated with the satire evident in the work of El Greco, Jack Levine, George Grosz and Jacob Lawrence as they painted the people of their times.
